R&D Beginnings

From our beginnings SMARTS has built a culture of continuous innovation.

From its university beginning, SMARTS has maintained a close relationship with technology research essential to our operations, and retained an R&D culture.

Our first products were developed as a result of a revolutionary shift in market operations, namely the transformation of markets from floor trading to automated trading. While many domain experts were still debating the merits of this development alone, our team realized that this change required the development of new means of monitoring the activity on the market.

Still largely university based at the time, the SMARTS team developed not only the technology required to effectively conduct monitoring of automated markets, but further recognised that the technology alone was only going to be part of the solution. In an evolving market environment dominated by massive change, the ability to learn and adapt to the needs of the market are essential, on an ongoing basis.

This led to the development of Market Integrity Research, meaning the work required to understand where current and future issues related to market integrity lay in market operations, how to use a combination of sensible rules and technology based monitoring to address those, and most importantly how to continuously improve such technology to react to constant change and improve market integrity overall.
